Is Your Persimmon Soap Real?
We only do this once a year. Because Kakiyu wasn't built to be cheap. It was built for women who noticed their grandchildren stopped holding on as long. The fruit is picked green, once a year, and the fermenting takes months. When a batch is gone it's gone until next autumn. There's an oil your skin starts producing after a certain age. It's called nonenal. Regular soap doesn't touch it — soap is built for sweat and dirt, and nonenal is oil. Different chemistry. It's the reason your husband sits a little further away. The reason your grandchildren — well, you already noticed. Kakiyu is the Japanese persimmon soap built to bind it. The fermented tannin does what soap can't: it lifts the oil instead of pushing it around. One bar lasts about six weeks of daily use. Within the first week your pillowcases smell different. Your cardigans stop holding it. Diospyros Kaki Fruit Extract, named on the ingredient list. Not "fragrance". Not a dye. This season's batch is nearly gone.
